After much soul searching, discussion and heart break, it is with great sadness that we have decided to close Gertie’s as a fully operational guinea pig rescue. With many changes in our personal lives in the last 12 months we have both been struggling to find time for everything. Juggling full-time work with full-time caring responsibilities, means we are just not able to run the rescue as actively as we’d like.
We have not taken this decision lightly and have agonised over bringing our dream to a close. Running a rescue is mentally, emotionally and physically draining and constant – you can’t take a break. If you are not cleaning, caring for and feeding piggies, you are answering social media messages, emails, finding adopters, bonding pigs, ordering supplies, raising funds, doing the accounts etc. and you need to be 100% on top of it all. We have tried to downsize but we are just unable to manage the competing demands of piggies, humans and our own lives. This decision has been very difficult to reach and putting it down in words incredibly hard.
One of the most painful things to say goodbye to, is the community and support we have at Gertie’s. You lot have come through for us so many times and have supported us, making it the success it is. We have met many incredible people over the years, many of whom have become our personal friends. Your support and kindness and shared passion for guinea pigs has made this decision even harder. We have loved every minute of running the rescue and remain passionate about guinea pigs and their welfare. We have had the honour of meeting and helping over 700 guinea pigs and countless wonderful people in the last 7 years. Gertie’s and all the supporters have become like a big family to us. We will be getting in touch with all of our piggy and pen sponsors separately so they may consider their continued support in light of our announcement.
Gertie’s will remain operational as we still have many residents in our sanctuary spaces and piggies up for adoption. In addition, companion pigs (piggies on loan) will need to return to find a new home when their older pal passes over the rainbow bridge. Therefore, the only immediate change is that we will not be taking in any further guinea pigs. We will still need to keep running as long as we have pigs (both adoptable and sanctuary) and hope you stay with us and continue to support the piggies and use our Group as the kind community you made it.
